# 9.8 Nicks and Bloodline Compatibility

This page explains Nicks and bloodline compatibility in Breed.

Nicks are a mechanism that checks combinations between Left-side and Right-side bloodlines.

The MANEKINEKO P-rank represents the rank of parameters.

For the basics of P-rank and bloodlines, see [6.4 Pararank & Lineage](/manekineko/parameter-rank.md).

### What are Nicks?

Nicks are a mechanism where bloodline compatibility adds upside elements to the P-rank lottery of the Breed result.

Nicks do not check whether two entries are the same MANEKINEKO individual.

They check the combination of bloodlines on the Left side and Right side.

| What is checked | Related judgment |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------- |
| Bloodline group | Nicks judgment |
| Bloodline name | Nicks judgment |
| Individual identifier code, or tokenId | Inbreeding judgment |

Nicks look at compatibility between bloodlines.

Inbreeding looks at whether the same individual overlaps.

### Season 1 bloodline compatibility table

The public bloodline compatibility table for Season 1 is fixed as follows.

| Left / Right | \[Z] Zenith | \[L] Luna | \[V] Vega | \[N] Nebula |
| ------------ | ----------- | --------- | --------- | ----------- |
| \[Z] Zenith | Neutral | Nick | None | None |
| \[L] Luna | None | Neutral | Nick | None |
| \[V] Vega | None | None | Neutral | Nick |
| \[N] Nebula | Nick | None | None | Neutral |

| Symbol | Meaning |
| ------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Nick | Nicks occur. |
| Neutral | Treated as same-system combination. In Season 1, it is not subject to Nicks effects. |
| None | No Nicks. |

None means there is no bloodline compatibility bonus.\
It does not mean the combination creates a negative effect by itself.

### Bloodlines used for Nicks judgment

Nicks judgment checks combinations between Left-side and Right-side bloodlines.

As explained in 9.6, in the current Breed judgment, the bloodlines held by both Left and Right are used as judgment material.

Nicks candidates are checked from combinations between up to 4 Left-side bloodlines and up to 4 Right-side bloodlines.

Therefore, up to 16 bloodline compatibility pairs can be checked.

`Left side up to 4 bloodlines x Right side up to 4 bloodlines = up to 16 candidates`

These bloodline compatibility checks are separate from whether the bloodlines remain in the child MANEKINEKO's Pedigree.

### Nicks count

Nicks count is the number of combinations that become effective Nicks among the combinations marked as Nick in the compatibility table.

The number of effective Nicks is capped at 3.

As the count increases from 1 to 2 to 3, the expected upside in the P-rank lottery becomes higher.

However, Nicks do not directly increase the Rare lottery.\
The handling of Breed results that include Rare is explained in [9.10 Bloodline Strategy and Breed Result Expectations](/breed/lineage-strategy-and-result-expectations.md).

***

### How effective Nicks are selected

Effective Nicks are selected from the combination that produces the highest possible number of Nicks without using the same Lineage more than once on either the Left or Right side. A maximum of three effective Nicks can be applied, so even if four or more Nicks candidates are formed, only up to three are selected.

If multiple combinations produce the same maximum number of Nicks, a combination that includes an effective Nick involving the Genesis Lineage is prioritized. This priority will never reduce the number of effective Nicks.

### Treatment of duplicate bloodline combinations

When counting Nicks candidates, the same bloodline or the same combination is not counted repeatedly.

The basic concept is as follows.

| Item | Treatment |
| ------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------- |
| Same bloodline appears multiple times on the same side | Counted only once. |
| Same bloodline pair appears multiple times | Treated as the same combination. |
| Same bloodline group pair but different bloodline pair | Can become a separate Nicks candidate. |

As a result, Nicks count is not a simple count of visible entries. It is determined after specification-based duplicate handling.

### Genesis premium

If an effective Nick includes Genesis bloodline, that Nick is treated as Genesis premium.

It is important to separate the following two states.

| State | Treatment |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| A Nicks candidate includes Genesis bloodline | Checked as a candidate. |
| A Nick that includes Genesis bloodline is selected as an effective Nick | Treated as Genesis premium. |

Genesis premium applies not merely when a Genesis bloodline Nicks candidate exists, but when that combination is selected as an effective Nick.

Genesis premium is an element related to P-rank lottery upside.\
The detailed lottery treatment is explained in [9.10 Bloodline Strategy and Breed Result Expectations](/breed/lineage-strategy-and-result-expectations.md).

### OG / Origin and Nicks

OG and Origin are treated differently in Nicks judgment.

| Type | Treatment in Nicks judgment |
| ---------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| OG placed on Left | The bloodline manifested at Breed execution is treated as the current Left-side bloodline. |
| OG placed on Right | Bloodline manifestation does not occur, and the OG individual itself is not used as a standard bloodline for Nicks judgment. |
| Origin placed on Left | Genesis bloodline is treated as the Left-side bloodline. |
| Origin placed on Right | Genesis bloodline is included in the current judgment as a Right-side bloodline. |

The basic differences between OG / Origin / Genesis bloodline are explained in [9.7 OG / Origin / Genesis](/breed/og-origin-genesis.md).

This page focuses only on the parts related to Nicks judgment.

### Relationship with Inbreeding

Nicks and Inbreeding are separate judgments.

Nicks look at compatibility between bloodlines.

Inbreeding looks at whether the same MANEKINEKO individual overlaps.

However, depending on the Inbreeding state, the treatment of Nicks effects may change.

When Inbreeding is Danger / Forbidden, the effective Nicks count for that Breed attempt is treated as 0.\
Genesis premium also does not apply.

The combined judgment with Inbreeding is explained in [9.9 Inbreeding and Combined Judgment](/breed/inbreeding-and-combined-judgment.md).

### Summary

Nicks are a mechanism for checking bloodline compatibility between the Left side and Right side.

In the Season 1 bloodline compatibility table, combinations marked as Nick are the targets for Nicks.

Up to 16 Nicks candidates can be checked, but the effective Nicks count is capped at 3.

If a Nick that includes Genesis bloodline is selected as an effective Nick, it is treated as Genesis premium.

Nicks mainly relate to upside in the P-rank lottery.

When Inbreeding is Danger / Forbidden, Nicks effects do not apply for that Breed attempt.

The next page explains [Inbreeding and its combined judgment with Nicks](/breed/inbreeding-and-combined-judgment.md).
